My parents insisted I stay behind to feed the dog and water the plants while the rest of the family went on vacation. When I asked why, my sister looked at me and said, “That’s all you’re good for in this house.” I packed my bags and walked away. The next morning, the police called with news that changed everything. (Part 2)

Richard.

My father.

I looked back at Officer Ruiz, completely confused.

“What does that even mean?”

He answered without speculation.

“That,” he replied calmly, “is exactly what we’re trying to figure out.”

Before either of us could continue, my phone began ringing. My father’s name appeared on the screen, and I answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

Instead of responding, he demanded,

“Why are police at my house?”

“Because someone broke in.”

For several long seconds, all I heard was silence.

“Dad,” I continued, “the person who broke in left a note. It says to ask you why.”

Another pause followed before I heard my mother speaking somewhere in the background.

“Richard, what did she say?”

He ignored her completely.

“Emily,” he said quietly, “do not discuss anything personal with the police.”

Officer Ruiz looked directly at me but remained silent.

My father continued speaking.

“I’ll handle everything when I get home.”

Something about his voice chilled me far more than the sight of the broken front door.

“Handle what?”

“Just do as I say.”

For most of my life, I would have obeyed those words without asking another question. This time, I made a different decision.

I turned toward Officer Ruiz, held out my phone, and said,

“Put it on speaker.”

I placed the phone on speaker without taking my eyes off Officer Ruiz. He remained completely silent, allowing my father to keep talking until he realized every word could now become part of an official police investigation.

“Richard,” Officer Ruiz said, “this is Officer Daniel Ruiz with the Westbrook Police Department. We’d appreciate your cooperation.”

My father hesitated before replying.

“I’ve already told my daughter I’ll explain everything when I get home.”

Ruiz answered in the same calm tone.

“This isn’t a private family discussion anymore.”

Only a few seconds later, my father ended the call without another word. Officer Ruiz lowered his notebook and looked at me thoughtfully before making an observation that immediately confirmed the same feeling growing inside me.

“That wasn’t the reaction of someone surprised by a burglary.”

I couldn’t disagree with him.

Less than an hour later, my parents’ SUV pulled into the driveway. My mother rushed toward the damaged entrance in shock, while Vanessa immediately searched for someone to blame instead of asking whether anyone had been hurt. My father barely acknowledged the broken front door before focusing all of his attention on me.

“What happened here?” my mother cried.

Before anyone else could answer, Officer Ruiz stepped forward.

“We have several questions.”

My father ignored him and looked directly at me.

“Emily, I told you to wait.”

I folded my arms.

“I did.”

His expression tightened the moment he noticed the handwritten note sealed inside an evidence bag. Without thinking, he immediately asked the one question that caught everyone’s attention.

“Where did you find that?”

“On your dining room table,” Officer Ruiz replied.

For a split second, something changed in my father’s face before he quickly recovered.

“I’ve never seen it before.”

Officer Ruiz calmly held up another evidence bag.

“Then perhaps you can explain why your fingerprints are on it.”

For the first time all afternoon, my father had nothing to say.

Vanessa immediately stepped between us, trying to redirect the conversation.

“This is ridiculous. Somebody broke into our house, and now you’re treating my dad like a criminal?”

Officer Ruiz never shifted his attention away from my father.
